A great receiver for the price, not sure where others' problems come from January 5, 2009 B. Watkins Well, I was a bit nervous after reading a lot of the bad reviews of this receiver on Amazon. Customers' problems seemed to range from not understanding the manual at all, not being able to get the rear surround speakers working, and having problems with Denon customer service. First, I went to Denon's site and downloaded a PDF of the manual. Honestly, I'm not a computer programmer or anything like that but I really didn't understand where all the confusion was coming from. Yes, it is a complex receiver, but if you want a cheap, plug-it-in-and-turn-it-on receiver then buy one of those surround systems in a box and your done. I even understood why it was only putting out 5.1 and not 7.1 from looking right at the PDF manual without yet having the unit in my hands (look on page 30 where it says "define how the amplifier for the surround back speaker channels is used."). So I decided to get it...and am I glad I didn't take heed of the negative reviews. It is a great receiver. Some folks here complained about how the volume was read in -db (so when you turned up the volume the digits decreased closer to ONE (+1) db. EVERY receiver I have ever owned has read the volume this way (a Yamaha and a Sony). Deal with it. The one annoying aspect of the unit is its remote control. Most of the operating functions are located on the front of the control, but there are more set up buttons on the bottom of the remote in a flip open compartment. A little annoying at first, but many of these buttons are used for entering menus and setting the unit up. Not to mention that you are probably going to buy a universal remote to handle all your devices any way (if you're not, and you're happy using 3 or 4 remotes, good for you) and you'll end up putting the Denon remote away.
Overall, I have no problems with this unit, the manual didn't confuse me (so maybe I should apply for that rocket scientist position) and I had everything set up and was watching Blu-ray's with full surround sound in no time. So if you understand how high end receivers function, don't be scared off by the reviews from users who prefer a Fisher Price brand receiver.
AMAZING!! December 22, 2008 T. D. Seiple (Virgnia Beach, VA) I just do not think there is anything better for this price. It sounds amazing, setup is a breeze, and the HDMI upconversion works like it should. I have not had a single problem with this unit.
Thank you Amazon!!
Very nice Home Theater Receiver December 20, 2008 DEADPUPPYFURCOAT (The Brickyard, Indpls.) A little complex (I had to actually read this manual), but working things out, great features and a great sounding system!
What a Deal Amazon and Denon! December 14, 2008 Honest Abe (CT) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Amazon has such awesome deals. This may be last year's model because it has only 2 HDMI inputs (and an out, of course all pass audio) and is cheap but don't let that stop you. This is one heck of a receiver. Bought this as a replacement after my THIRD Sony croaked. I am an engineer and I don't abuse my electronics. Sony makes JUNK..plain and simple. Great specs and work well for 1-2 yrs tops.
Anyway, the Denon AVR-888 has 2 features that were really important to me.
1. It allows 2 channels to be used in another room as stereo, with its own input select independent of the main. This leaves you with 5.1 channels (I don't have room for the side speakers of 7.1) and it STILL sounds fantastic. We like music throughout the house, this does it.
2. It uses an automated setup process (Audessey) with a (included)microphone and it is AMAZING. In the past, I used a sound level meter to set up all my Sonys and it took all day. This took about 15 minutes and is dead-on. Excellent sound images in the whole listening area and the hardware is really well made.
So yes, per other reviews, the remote is a real stinker. Ever see a remote with a front AND a back set of buttons (lots of them) behind a door? This puppy's got it and that's just ridiculous but I don't use the beast anyway. Mind you, the remote works fine, but it just leaves you looking for the foot pedals and gear shift. I use a Logitech 550 universal remote (another unbelievable product. It uses online PC programming with all the latest control codes) and that works prfectly. So after all is said and done, this little negative, is not really one for me at all.
If you're thinking about a surround receiver on a budget, need HDMI for a blue-ray and your cable DVR and can live with optical, digital and component inputs for the rest of your sources, you're good to go with this one. (There are HDMI expanders sold if you ever need one, but you don't really want your kid's video games burning Mario into your expensive Hi-Def screen anyway)
So,think no longer, just BUY it !

Denon AVR-888 7.1-Channel/5.1+2-Channel Independent Zone Home Theater Receiver with HDMI I/O and Serial I/R Control (Black)
Serial Number: 8021514423
I can not get any sound from the unit. I tried to connect Polkaudio system 5.1 speaker system and it would not work. I contacted Tech support and he tried to help, but he told me it was an internal problem with the receiver. I had to return the unit to the New Jersey at a cost of $39.00 shipping. Needless to say I am not one bit happy with Amazon to allow defective products to be sold. milt milters2000@yahoo.com
