Works with the Touch via USB October 22, 2008 Adam Swick (Houston, TX USA) This is a great little dock to connect to your computer via USB for iTunes syncing and charging. It includes power adapters for non-US use.
The only issue is that the dock is dated. If you own an iPod made in the past 3 years, throw-out the dock adapters (except the 5G 30GB one, possibly the 60GB one). The 5G 30GB adapter should work with most current iPods, not a tight fit, but it works. You will also need to buy a USB cable (regular to mini), as newer iPods will not support connectivity using the included firewire cable.
The 2G iPod Touch is known to be "iffy" with older charge cables. The included power adapter does not charge my Touch, although the 3rd party USB cable I have attached to the dock will charge the iPod Touch without any problems.
Very nice for the price, just wish it was compatible with the Apple dock adapters and the power adapter could charge my iPod Touch when traveling.
Gets the job done...until it stops working May 12, 2008 L. Parker (MD) EDIT: Today this dock stopped working properly. My iPod does not sense power from the dock and does not charge while its docked. I also have to turn the ipod off and back on when I first insert it into the dock in order for it to sense power from the dock. For 4 hours the ipod was sitting on the dock and wasn't charging. Now, the battery is completely dead and I had to use the regular apple power cord to charge it some to get it to even turn on. When I dock it now, on a half charge, and turn it off so that it can sense power from the dock, it still doesn't charge. I looked and the ipod thinks its fully charged. I would say its my ipod and not the dock, except why does it work just fine when plugged in via USA, the apple power cord, my car charger, and while running on the small charge it has?
This dock is half the price of the Apple dock and accomplishes the same thing. It worked fine for me with my 80 GB 5th generation iPod and my old mini. It comes with all the cables needed to sync, charge, and connect the ipod to external speakers. I don't play videos on my ipod so I don't need this dock to output the video. My only wish is that it came in black.
Functional Item March 1, 2008 Kenneth L. Church (Clovis, CA, USA) I use this product to connect my iPod Nano 2G to my home stereo receiver. The connection works fine if connected to the CD port on the receiver. Any other ports (at least on my receiver) do not have adequate amplification.
The only problem I had was the adaptor for the Nano provided with the product did not fit my iPod. So I don't use any of the adaptors provided with the product and it works fine just mounted (without adaptor) on the receiving port.
I needed to buy a separate cable to connect the product to the RCA ports on the receiver but the cable was inexpensive.
I am using this simple setup to replace a large, expensive digital jukebox that recently "bit it".
Excellent Dock! January 10, 2008 M. Bobbe (USA) Before I start in with the review of the product itself, I will tell my story about a friend's iPod and this dock. He accidentally washed his 5g iPod video, and it was pretty much dead. When he plugged it into his computer or his USB dock, it just showed the dead battery icon on the screen and would not start. When he plugged it into this dock... IT WORKED! It would play music and everything and worked fine, but only when using this dock. When he unplugged it, it would lose all power. Figuring it was the battery, I bought a replacement for minimal $$. Lo and behold... it worked! This dock must have something others don't. I think it has to do with the fact that it charges via firewire, which uses 12 volts instead of 5 volts. I believe 12 volts is enough to start an ipod with no power, whereas 5 volts will merely charge it and won't start it. Thrilled with the success of this iPod, I bought another iPod (a nano this time) that had been through the wash. Unfortunately the screen didn't work, but it did start the iPod just as it did with the 5g. I replaced the battery and it worked again, but the screen didn't work. I still use it as a 4 gig shuffle, though. In short, this dock has worked wonders for iPods that have battery problems or no power... it can start an iPod where the usb adapter can't. Because it also has a usb output, it can transfer songs from a non-firewire ipod while being powered from a firewire connection. While that may sound very techinical, it does mean one thing: This should will start an iPod that seems dead. It saved my friend $270, and it may save you some money as well. As a dock, this item works as well as can be expected. It offers as many output options as you need. Another pleasent surprise was that the tv out comes through the line out, which I originally thought was exclusively for sound. It also offers S-video as well as usb and firewire syncing. For $30, I highly recommend this dock. If you don't like it, you should be able to simply return it. You won't be sorry if you buy this!
Great Deal. February 27, 2007 Mr. Buyer (Manhattan, New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Don't bother buying apples dock-get this. I have been using this with my iPod video for the past year, and it has yet to fail me. It always works, it came with lots of cables, and it works just as well as an apple dock. The only little gripe I have about it is that the blue light on the dock does not light when plugged into a computer-it only lights when charged from a wall plug. But if you think about it all the light would do is get annoying. This is great for traveling as it has connections for everything. Love the price-love the contents-and I love how it does not feel cheap AT ALL. Buy it, it is great for the price.
